So, I figured just cause I can't get organized doesn't me YOU can't...I think the hardest part of starting to get organized is getting started.. Just think of all the times you tore your house apart looking for something (if your like me) it was right in front of you the whole time... ;-) I read in one of my many Organizing & Home Decor' books that "Organizing is the act of giving yourself more time and peace of mind"...So so true!!
When you look at all your belonging, try to understand the role they play in your life. Are they collectibles??? and if they are, are they full of dust (they really are not collectibles...they are dust collectors)?? I learned if it's a collectible it's precious to you or in value and they should be cared for and proud to show off.... Memories?? Gifts?? What ever you call your belongings you need to organize in the way that is best for you...
Some things that don't work is digging through your closet to find something to wear, planning dinner, taking "Me" time...Maybe you want to be able to pay bills on time...or just spend more time with family...
Choose the area or room you would like to start...Start small because purging can be overwhelming...A good place to start might be a drawer or cabinet...Get a timer and give yourself 20 min and don't stop until you've reached your set goal...
Pull everything out from your target area and begin to sort into bins, boxes, bags...what ever works for you...I use my recycled bags because they are sturdy with handles and easy for me to carry from room to room...SEE aren't they cute???
Ask yourself...Do you LOVE it?? Do you really NEED it??? Can someone else USE it???
Once you have sorted everything...PUT them where they belong...Discard garbage...Put your "Donate" bag in your car (if you leave it sit around something is bound to come out of that bag) ~Not like I would know or anything~...hehe
Another good TIP is too put anything you don't use in a box and tape it up and put it in the trunk of your vehicle...If you haven't touched it in 3 months...drive by goodwill and drop it off...You probably will forgot what was in it anyways...
Now that you completed the first area of your home...try and make it a routine...
Remember: it takes 21 days to turn it into a habit and it takes the rest of your life to continue that habit ;-)
DO YOU HAVE A PURGING HABIT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE???
I live full time in a fifth wheel rv so you would think that keeping organized would be easy. It's not! I so badly need to start purging stuff.

I have a great purge tip...MOVE your whole house ;) Nothing makes you get right of stuff like moving...right Denyse ;) It's a constant struggle to purge because everytime we buy something we become emotionally attached...so here's another tip...STOP BUYING! I stopped by asking myself everytime I even THINK about buying something...where am I going to put this when I get home? If I really want it...then I made a deal with my hubby...something old has to go out for every new item that comes in!!! The reality is...the bigger you space the more you collect and the less you use it. Just find a way to fill yourself up emotionally,in lieu of filling your empty physical spaces. Hope this helps ;)
ReplyDeleteDenyse, Thanks for visiting my blog. :) Just stopping by to say hi.

A Bowl Full of Lemons
great post. I am working in the home office, but husband decided to add a skylight to the attic, and needed my help. While I waited for instructions, I started sorting through the boxes and bins in the attic. Will be posting on Friday at my blog.
ReplyDeleteFollowed from the hop. Goodness, reading this makes me realize how badly I need to organize my office! You could say I really like and hate this post at the exact same time!!!

It's always a great feeling when a blog posting can motivate someone to get organized...it all has to start somewhere ;-)
ReplyDeleteMore time and peace of mind is exactly what I need! I am feeling so inspired!
